Our Story

By 2030 our goal is to avoid 30 million tons of emissions annually, benefitting 3 million people, across 30 million acres

BCP was founded

REDD+ Developers in Africa

People working across 18 Chiefdoms

Using nature-based solutions to emissions reduction, BCP is a mission-driven forest conservation company

Working across over 1.2 million hectares of threatened forests in 18 Chiefdoms throughout  Zambia,  BCP’s mission is to make conservation of wildlife habitat valuable to people. BCP employs over 200 people across 7 sites in Zambia. With plans to expand regionally, our life-changing impacts and emission-reduction conservation efforts are only going to grow!

BCP was born out of an intense passion for African conservation

BCP supports African conservation through a market-driven approach, boosting Africa’s green economy through a sustainable form of conservation finance. With world-class national parks, and vast but rapidly disappearing forests, Zambia was chosen as the country to lay the foundation of BCP in early 2012. We didn’t have a glamorous start.

Our initial core team worked out of a living room before moving our office into a tiny garden shed behind a donor’s office. Yet, we brought grit and a strong commitment to showing that these forests were more valuable standing than cut down.

Over the past 10 years, we have emerged as one of the leading REDD+ developers in Africa. Few companies globally have VCS verified a REDD+ project 8 consecutive times: BCP is one such company.

World-Class Credits with World-Class Impacts

The Lower Zambezi REDD+ Project was our initial pilot project. Since its inception, we have gone on to achieve unique milestones for both Zambia and Africa by becoming the first Verified Carbon Standard verified project in the country and then going on to achieve another 8 consecutive verifications.

LZRP was also the first REDD+ project in Africa to earn gold level validation against all 3 categories for the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard for our exceptional community level and environmental impacts. We are most proud of our community impacts, that wildlife numbers are increasing in the Lower Zambezi REDD+ Project, and of our hard-working and committed team.

2021 Environmental Finance's Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings

In the 2021 Environmental Finance’s Voluntary Carbon Market Rankings, LCFP was the world’s best REDD+ project, while our Impact Report was voted the Best Impact Monitoring Report in the World. BCP featured  Runner-Up as the world’s best forest carbon offset developer, and the overall carbon developer categories.

Ranked amongst the top 0.5% of B Corps globally, in 2021 BCP was awarded the “Best for Workers’ out of over 4,000 registered B Corp companies worldwide for our commitment to our BCPeople.
